Countdown to 10x10

The response to our invitation to Fountain Street Studios artists to create 10x10 in. panels for the April show has been overwhelming! Artists began bring in completed work on Saturday, first by ones and twos, and over the weekend the collection has grown to over 70 pieces- all different, surprising in so many ways! Some people tried techniques and ideas they'd wanted to experiment with for a long time. Others did smaller, more intimate versions of their signature styles. Some are 3D, some are mixed media. There are oils, acrylics, collages, photographs. It's been really wonderful to see all the creative energy that exists in this building, and especially great to see how individual artists have enjoyed seeing what their neighbors have produced, discussing ideas and techniques, coming together in such a collaborative spirit.

As we start hanging the show we're looking at the way each square relates to its neighbors; it's quite a challenge because size is the only constant here. We've been reminding ourselves that there's no one right way to hang this show; instead there are more 'right ways' than we can count. The show will be a delightful, lighthearted event that brings a diverse group of artists together and showcases the depth and breadth of what we do here at Fountain Street Studios.

Come see for yourself!
The show opens Friday April 1st, and runs through April 30th. We're open every Friday- Sun. 11-5.

A reminder, too, that Fountain Street Studios Open Studio Weekend is April 8-10. Over 50 individual studios will be open- a great way to visit with artists in their workspaces and see more of their work.

Save the Date!

Less than three weeks till Open Studios, the busiest weekend of the year at Fountain Street Studios.
The gallery's planning  10x10, a group show of work by Fountain Street Artists, each on 10x10 in. birch panel, each priced at $150, each one of a kind!

Our goals for the 10x10 group show are  to promote Fountain Street Studios as a wholeto show at a glance all the fantastic art the building has to offer, and to encourage each visitor to be an active participant and to really LOOK at the art.

But mostly, to have FUN!

Open Studios draws a very diverse crowd- everybody from friends, families looking for an afternoon out, first timers trying on the idea of buying original art, to seasoned collectors. We're hoping that the weekend's events in the gallery will appeal to most people wherever they are on this continuum.
Our plan for the show is to make have the pieces on the wall unlabeled. We’ll provide printouts of the wall of the FSS show to each visitor to take away with them, with images, names and studio numbers listed. We’ll also print a sheet with artist names omitted, so a guest can go on a ‘scavenger hunt’ to see if he/she can match a piece in the gallery with an artist’s work in the studio. Guests can take one or both sheets. The idea is to ask visitors to take a good look at the work in the gallery, remember and recognize it upstairs, by making a game of it. It’ll be FUN, but you won’t have to play.

We're having a ‘make your own’ 10x10 public art event where anyone can make their own 10x10 on paper, hang it on a separate wall, and take it home with them at the end of the day. We will videotape the installation as it grows and changes. It’ll generate publicity, it’ll draw in visitors, it’ll be FUN!

We're also hosting a concurrent show of work by middle schoolers at McAuliffe Regional Charter Public School, a public school in downtown Framingham that draws students from several towns in the region. The kids have been creating their own 10x10 in. works on paper to display in the gallery.

We'd like to thank the Local Cultural Councils of Medway, Natick, Southborough and Weston for helping to sponsor these events.

Our reason for opening the gallery in the first place was to create and foster community, and to spread an appreciation of the importance of art in our lives every day. It may sound all touchy-feely, but we really believe this. 10x10 is how it all comes together!

“The things people discard tell more about them than the things they keep.” -Hilda Lawrence

Listening to Lisa Barthelson and Virginia Fitzgerald speak at the gallery last weekend I realized how telling and accurate this was for the work of these two artists. Both of them spoke of the importance of materials in the creation of their pieces. Lisa mines the history of her family by incorporating outgrown, discarded, everyday items, and by printing, layer upon layer, sees the underlying beauty and resurrects them in a new form. Virginia tells the story of  the complexity of womanhood with whatever material speaks to her. The artists both spoke of artists who inspire them- Andy Goldsworthy, Louise Bourgeois, many others. In turn, they inspired those of us who heard them speak. We were fortunate that Lisa and Virginia’s conversation was videotaped by Framingham Public Access Cable, and will be broadcast soon in Framingham and surrounding communities. We’ll keep you posted!

Oh, and be sure to stop by and walk on Virginia’s newest piece, the’ Carbon Footprint Dress’!

Looking forward, our plan for April takes a different turn. The Gallery will hold a group show of gallery members and building artists, featuring 10”x10” artworks on birch panel in a variety of media. This show will run from April 1-30, 2011. Each piece is for sale at $150. The identity of the artist will only be revealed upon purchase. A great way to discover a new favorite artist!

A concurrent show of 10”x10” works on paper by students from McAuliffe Regional Charter Public School will also be on display for the month of April. Located in Framingham, the middle school primarily serves eight Metrowest communities: Framingham, Natick, Ashland, Holliston, Sudbury, Southborough, Hopkinton, and Marlborough.

During Open Studios Weekend, April 8-10, 2011, Fountain Street Fine Art will host a ‘See ART/Make ART’ public art event. Visitors are invited to create their own 10"x10" artwork (all materials provided) to hang in the gallery while they visit the studios in the building, and to take away with them at the end of the day.
A time-lapse video, produced by Open Studios participant Johnych Studios, will document the ‘work in progress’ as it takes shape on the gallery wall. The event is supported in part by the Local Cultural Councils of Medway, Natick, Southborough, and Weston.

March is about what we do- showcase a body of work by talented, respected artists , like Lisa and Virginia, from around the region.  April is about who we are; our reason for being is to create and foster community, and to spread an appreciation of the importance of art in our lives every day. The 10x10 show brings together the Fountain Street Artists, the children at nearby McAuliffe School, and all the visitors to Open Studios in one collective, interactive exhibit. The show is uniified by the 10x10 square format, but each piece of art is unique, a product of the imagination and vision of its creator. 10x10 connects the building, the neighborhood, and the wider world.

March

Monday morning, we took down 'unscripted', our first show. It seems like yesterday we were scrambling to have everything ready for the opening. But by monday afternoon, we had a clean canvas again, ready for the next exhibit, feeling the energy and promise of the next great adventure.
One last look, as  'unscripted' comes down.

Today Lisa Barthelson, the mixed media artist whose print installation, 'family debris series,' will be on view in the gallery beginning Friday March 4th, arrived with a roomful of monoprints. She and fellow artist Carrie Crane immediately set to work unpacking, arranging, measuring and hanging the installation. Virginia Fitzgerald, who will exhibit some of her pieces from 'the dress project',  brought one of her dresses and installed it alongside Lisa's prints. Seeing the new work fill the space with a completely new aesthetic and energy was really exciting; seeing the two artists together in the gallery, their work complementing one another's so well, was even more gratifying.

This exhibit runs from March 4th through the 27th.
