What's new for March!

'The dress project' is a synthesis of Virginia Fitzgerald’s experience as an artist, mother, wife and woman in today’s world and culture.  Through this project Fitzgerald is able to face fears, passions, memories, belief systems, current events and social expectations. Her creation process of the dress is rooted deeply in the found or chosen materials used. She sees potential in many things that are usually discarded and dismissed.

Lisa Barthelson's  'family debris series' is an ongoing series of mixed media work that re-uses 3D and 2D permanent and ephemeral objects culled from her family’s post consumer waste stream. The mixed media prints in this site-specific installation embrace the walls with color and texture derived from the over printing of our ephemeral debris. After absorbing the chaos of swirling debris, the viewer is invited to move in close to the surfaces to feel the intimacy of a family’s cast offs, re-ordered. Layered as it might be found in a landfill, the detritus offers a new avenue for experiencing what we work so hard to purchase and so effortlessly throw away.

The show runs from March 4- 27. Gallery hours are Fri-Sun. 11-5, by appointment, and by chance.

Artists' Resource

One of the driving forces in our desire to open a gallery at Fountain Street Studios was to have a place to congregate as artists- to learn from one another, to have a break from the necessary isolation in which we do our best work. Last week we had an opportunity to see that wish come true. Adria Arch, a working artist with Golden Paints, conducted a free workshop at the gallery. Adria spent a couple of hours demonstrating  the unique properties of many of the newest Golden products. About twenty people attended, about half of them from the building. It felt really good to see the gallery as the resource we'd imagined, and to see it filled with artists learning from one another.

Adria Arch conducts a Golden Paints demonstration in the gallery.
This was just the first of many workshops, artist talks, maybe even movie screenings, that we plan to provide.
Stay tuned!

Looking forward

Since the Opening a little over a week ago, there’s been a steady stream of visitors every day that the gallery’s been open. People have found us through news reports in the Metrowest Daily News  and the Boston Globe, online in  WickedLocal  and Patch postings for many Boston area communities, or in Artscope online magazine. Visitors have stopped in because of their friends’ recommendations (thanks!). Several people combined a visit to our gallery with a trip to the Danforth Museum- a two-for-one arts afternoon!

As we look around our beautiful new gallery-
then...
...and now!
We’re filled with awe and wonder- (We MADE this??!!!)  And bewilderment  (Now what??!!!)

We have been so pleased to see the immensely positive response from all our visitors, and encouraged by sales in the gallery.  By far, however, the most common question is “ What’s next?”

Anyone who’s had a baby (or anyone who’s been one) knows that birth is the easy part.  Our task now is to nurture and grow the gallery to realize our dreams for the space.  Over the next few months, we plan to host a variety of exhibitions, workshops and events as well as to welcome core and associate artists who are talented, adventurous, and who share our vision.

Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up:

In March, printmaker and mixed media artist Lisa Barthelson will exhibit her installation ‘family debris series'. She will be joined by 3D artist Virginia Fitzgerald, creator of ‘the dress project’.

April is Open Studios month at Fountain Street Studios. A 10x10 exhibit of work by building and member artists is planned, along with a public art installation.

Look for Roy Perkinson’s work, “Moods of Light’, in May.

Photos from our Opening Reception

Over 300 people celebrated with us at our Grand Opening Reception!  The gallery was so packed that many people are planning a return visit so that they can get an unobstructed view of the art!  Visitors were impressed with the quality and diversity of the art in the 'unscripted' inaugural show.  Guests also commented on how beautiful and inviting the space looks, and those who remembered its humble beginnings were amazed at the transformation.

Many people asked 'What's next?'
We are in the process of planning our exhibitions and programming for the rest of 2011.
Stay tuned- details will follow!

The current exhibition is on view until February 27th
Gallery hours are Friday-Sunday from 11AM-5PM
-also by appointment and by chance!

Marie and Cherie relax and enjoy!

We're so proud of our baby!

Party ON!

The forecast for Saturday night’s Opening Reception has been ominous for days.
(What else is new, you might ask?)

Since we share a birthday (with each other, as well as with the gallery) we’ve had more than our share of celebrations cancelled due to winter weather.

But not this time....

We’re OPEN and ready to party!
There’s music, food, and of course, a gallery full of excellent artwork for you to enjoy.

So whatever the weather, stop by and celebrate with us!

For directions, see our website www.FountainStreetFineArt.com

(If you’d really rather snuggle in on Saturday night, please come by on Sunday, 11-5.
We're sure there’ll be some residual partying going on!)
